Factory Tour at TROX SE – Insights into Production for the Creation of Digital Twins

As part of the Construct-X research project, we from the Digital Planning, Construction, and Operations Department had the opportunity to tour the TROX SE plant in Anholt together with colleagues from Fraunhofer IFF (Use Case “Networked Planning”).

For us, the focus was particularly on the Construct-X use case “Creation of Digital Product Twins.” The goal of the visit was to gain a better understanding of the points in the production process where information and identifiers are generated that could serve as the basis for digital product twins and the traceability of construction products throughout their entire lifecycle.

We were particularly impressed by:

• the enormous product diversity, with a number of variants in the eight-digit range,

• the highly automated production and packaging processes, and

• the consistent use of production and process data to optimize internal workflows.

From a scientific perspective in particular, it was fascinating to observe how closely production processes and data management are intertwined. After all, the question of what information is generated at which stage of a manufacturing process - and how it can be made interoperable in the future - is a central building block for digital product twins and the digital traceability of construction products. The cross-organizational linking of these product twins with the digital building twin opens up the possibility of implementing building resource passports and supporting a data-driven circular economy in the construction industry.

A heartfelt thank you goes especially to Peter Klötgen, Kai Lackmann, and Daniel Leitner for the extremely informative and engaging plant tour, as well as to the entire TROX SE team for their candid insights and valuable professional exchange. Visits like these play an important role in bringing research and industrial practice closer together and jointly advancing the digitalization of the construction and building industry.
