Digital recording of the Wuppertal Bismarck Tower
An essential basis for the design process was the digital recording of the Wuppertal Bismarck Tower on the Hardt grounds using a 3D laser scanner provided by the BIM Lab.
Our state-of-the-art 3D laser scanner enabled a precise and detailed recording of the monument. This digital inventory provided a realistic 3D model that served as a starting point for the students' design experiments. With the help of this scan, the participants were able to develop various strategies and alienate and reinterpret the historic building in innovative ways.
The aim was to approach the design and reappropriation of the Bismarck Tower and the adjacent parking lot in the form of a speculative, narrative-driven project that reflects the site's multi-layered material and cultural connections. The brief was to design a community center, with students encouraged to develop individual definitions of 'community' as well as creative approaches to demolition, subtraction, preservation or reconstruction.
The BIM Lab is proud to have made a key contribution to this exciting project with its technology. We look forward to continuing to support innovative teaching and research projects and demonstrating the possibilities of digital capture and modeling in construction.
