Digital planning, building and operating

Solar Decathlon Europe 21/22 meets Building Information Modeling

The international university competition "Solar Decathlon Europe" is coming to Germany for the first time in 2022. 18 teams from eleven countries will come together in Wuppertal to plan and build solar houses with a neutral or even positive energy balance and to operate and present them on the surrounding grounds around the former Mirker Bahnhof station building in Wuppertal-Elberfeld.

From May 20 to June 2, 2022, the planned designs will be set up as 1:1 scale demonstrations on the Solar Campus site, which will be open to visitors for two weeks from June 10, 2022, accompanied by guided tours and various events related to SDE21/22.

Work package

Creation of a BIM modeling guideline for the building data models of the demonstration units of the Solar Decathlon Europe 2021/22

Organizer: University of Wuppertal

Funded by: Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and energy endeavor Foundation

Project duration: 03/2021 - 06/2022

The BIM method is being used for the first time in the history of the Solar Decathlon so that the building data collected can be used for other applications in the future, such as for research purposes.

To this end, the Institute for the Management of Digital Processes in the Construction and Real Estate Industry/BIM Institute at the University of Wuppertal has created a BIM work package for the teams based on the Institute's BIM modeling guideline :

The application of a modeling guideline is intended to ensure that the building data models supplied by the teams have a uniform structure and can continue to be used for future applications. By recording the terrain using a drone and providing an environment model based on this, the placement of the individual teams' models into a holistic model is ensured. In addition, the quality of the delivered results is checked, evaluated and assessed by the institute by means of regular checks.
